In all, United Way of Lane County honored seven community volunteers for their extraordinary efforts, including Bob Bury of Birth to Three, Kevin Watts of Churchill High School, Corinne Standefer of Lane Memorial Blood Bank, Brett Deedon of Eugene Teen Courts and Dave Predeek of Friends of Buford Park & Mount Pisgah.
Sarasota's Teen Court was the inspiration for programs in 57 of Florida's 67 counties, making it one of the largest networks of teen courts in the nation.
Both inexpensive and effective, these teen courts are community-based, volunteer-driven vehicles both for handling juvenile crime--several recent studies show that peer courts can significantly reduce recidivism--and for teaching teenagers about volunteerism, civic participation, and law.
