Putin announced that his troops would advance only as far as the Terek River, which cuts the northern third of Chechnya off from the rest of the republic.
They are deployed into areas that have been optimistically declared free of mujahidin operations by the defence ministry, though in reality there is no such place south of the Terek river.
Many of them managed to escape through a ring of thousands of soldiers, and somehow, Chechen officials confirmed Monday, they apparently managed to drag dozens of hostages with them through the heavy gunbattle, across the frozen Terek River, and into the wooded forests of Chechnya.
