In 1936 (or thereabouts) he teamed up with Harry Moncrief Tennant and after Tennant's death in 1941 was sole boss of the H M Tennant empire, controlling Noel Coward and John Gielgud, two "very good friends," as well as Terrence Rattigan, Laurence Olivier, Rex Harrison, Vivienne Leigh and the Welsh contingent Burton, Baker and Emlyn Williams.
He told writer Terrence Rattigan he couldn't sing or dance, but was cast anyway.
Adapted from the Terrence Rattigan play, it is based on the true events surrounding a naval cadet found guilty of stealing a postal order.
