Colossal statues were very popular in antiquity, as evidenced by the lost giant statues of the Colossus of Rhodes and the Colossus of Nero.
Its only claim to be anything to do with being a wonder of the modern world is that people from Europe were unaware of it until quite a few years after the Colossus of Rhodes collapsed and the only remaining intact ancient wonder was the great pyramid at Giza.
The Colossus of Rhodes stood only 30m high (despite its reputation), the Great Pyramid of Giza stands at a mere 146m, even the famous Empire State in New York touches a bare 381m.
