The big screen legend, best known for playing gritty characters in thrillers including The Defiant Ones and The Sweet Smell Of Success, brought an element of "Hollywood realism" as Crawley described the incident to Talkback's 92,000 listeners.
Both books, the previous and the latest, a so-called "spiritual autobiography", share many of the same material about his stellar life in film, recycling similar anecdotes about his work in the ground-breaking Broadway play, A Raisin in the Sun, and other roles in such movies as The Blackboard Jungle, The Defiant Ones, Lilies of the Field, To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Throughout the segregated 50s and '60s, he was a trailblazer, with important and often controversial roles in movies such as Cry, the Beloved Country about South African apartheid; The Defiant Ones about black and white escaped convicts shackled together; and in 1959 as the lead in Lorraine Hansbury's A Raisin in the Sun, the first play by a black playwright to run on Broadway.
