A river of southwest Asia flowing about 2,735 km (1,700 mi) from central Turkey through Syria and into Iraq, where it joins the Tigris River to form the Shatt al Arab. Its waters were a major source of irrigation for the flourishing civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia.

Technicians and engineers of the Iraq state company for implementing irrigation ventures finalized the 261-km-long project to mainly address the problem of saline on the lands between al-Hilla coast and the left bank of the Euphrates river to include the provinces of Babel, Najaf, Diwaniya, Muthanna and Thi-Qar over an area of 750,000 donums," read a ministry statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Anbar, Iraq's biggest province, became the theatre of a brutal war focused on the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, while several towns along the Euphrates river valley became insurgent strongholds and later safe havens for fighters.
