The story of St George achieved mass circulation when it was printed in 1483 by William Caxton in a book called The Golden Legend.
The Golden Legend recounts briefly that Valentine was a priest who, because he professed Christianity and refused to worship idols, was beheaded by the emperor Claudius near the end of the third century.
The Golden Legend relates how he rescued Princess Cleolinda, who had been offered in sacrifice to a dragon living in a lake near Selena in Libya.
