Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, laid a wreath with Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris on Wednesday.
They were due to rekindle the flame on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in a symbolic appearance intended to signal a new step in Franco-German relations.
TG Noel Egerton suggests that the body of Harry Patch, the last known surviving soldier to have fought in World War I, should be laid to rest alongside that of The Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey (Viewpoints, July 31).
