1982: Death of jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Sphere Monk, instrumental in the development of "bebop".
Thelonious Sphere Monk was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1917, and "he made his escape," explains William Matthews in his poem "Well, You Needn't," "by turning himself into a genius" (36).
Among them were John Gillespie who played trumpet, Charles Christopher Parker who played alto saxophone, and Thelonious Sphere Monk who played piano.
