Tian·an·men Square  (tyänänmn)
An extensive open area in central Beijing, China, the world's largest public square. Adjacent to the Forbidden City, it has long been the site of festivals, rallies, and demonstrations. In 1989 Chinese troops fired on student demonstrators, killing an estimated 2,000 or more.

Amid 60 gun salutes and 200 national flag guards in olive green uniforms walked down the platform of the Monument to the People's Heroes in the center of Tian'anmen Square.
Iconic venues including the Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Rostrum, and the Great Hall of the People will close tomorrow at 3 pm, and reopen on Friday at the earliest, the Tian'anmen Square managing authority told METRO.
Along Chang'an Boulevard, by Tian'anmen Square and the Great hall of the people, the national flags and accompanying plain red ones stood rippling off their flagpoles, aglow in clear sunlight against the blue sky.
