Shen·yang  (shnyäng) Formerly Muk·den (mkdn, -dn, mk-)
A city of northeast China east-northeast of Beijing. The capital of Liaoning province, it was the site of the so-called Mukden, or Manchurian, Incident (1931), in which the Japanese army used an explosion on the railroad north of the city as a pretext to occupy Manchuria. Population: 3,980,000.

Chen Qiulin's video Farewell My Concubine, 2002, centers on the inundation of her hometown following the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, while Wang Bing's film Tiexi District (Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks), 2003, traces the fates of several mining families after the closing of the state-owned companies that employed them; they live without electricity until forced from their homes by developers.
Huddersfield Civic Society has presented its annual prize, The Peter Stead Sustainable Architecture Award, to Stuart Hollings, an architecture student at Huddersfield University's School of Art and Design Mr Hollings gave a talk about his designs for an interpretation centre for the Tiexi district of Shenyang in North East China, which formed the basis of his final-year submission for his degree in architecture.
