1. (Placename) an autonomous region of N Ethiopia, bordering on Eritrea: formerly a separate kingdom. Capital: Mekele. Pop.: 3 136 267 (1994). Area: 53 498 sq. km (20 656 sq. miles)
2. (Linguistics / Languages) a language of NE Ethiopia, belonging to the SE Semitic subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic family

An insurgency began almost immediately and in May 1991, revolutionary forces led by the Tigrai People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) overthrew the Socialist regime.
Not only that the situation in Oromia, Ogaden, Tigrai, Gondar, and with in the circle of Amhara region are getting worst.
Life as a subsistence farmer in the Tigrai region is hard enough.
