Tirailleur

Ti`rail`leur´
n.1.(Mil.) Formerly, a member of an independent body of marksmen in the French army. They were used sometimes in front of the army to annoy the enemy, sometimes in the rear to check his pursuit. The term is now applied to all troops acting as skirmishers.

Stereotypical images are violent for a number of reasons, as asserted by Anne Donadey in her analysis of images of Tirailleur senegalais: they serve to objectify and control the targeted group; they are imposed by the dominant ideology to over-determine any effort at self-definition; and they serve to cover colonial violence by domesticating African people into nonthreatening images as happy subordinates in the colonial order (Donadey 2000:15).
