For the same reason you don't believe in Zeus, Apollo, Tlaloc (Aztec god of the rain), or the so called Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Its date coincides with an Aztec feast celebrating Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, the gods of rain and water.
Popcorn was an important food for the Aztec Indians, who also used popcorn as decoration for ceremonial headdresses, necklaces and ornaments on statues of their gods, including Tlaloc, the god of rain and fertility.
