Although the Pacific cod population in the eastern Bering Sea is managed at sustainable overall harvest levels, intensive trawl fishing in a smaller area has been suspected of causing short-term, small-scale impacts on fish abundance (localized depletion) that are disproportionate to the overall harvest rate.
A seabed often disturbed by currents and waves is likely to be populated by small bottom animals that are resistant to the kinds of disturbance made by trawl fishing.
The standard gear for inshore trawl fishing is the 10-12 foot wooden lancha and a 40 hp motor.
