The latest controversy which erupted on Saturday after hackers posted the entire chain of emails online is centred around something called " Mike's Nature Trick" and how the scientists at the research centre -- one of whom, Kevin Trenberth, went on to win the Nobel Prize as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC) -- may have pumped up data to show that global warming continued even after the 1960s though tree ring data showed figures to the contrary.
Dendrochronology, or tree ring dating - the method of dating which makes use of the annual nature of tree growth - is being carried out by specialists in order to accurately date the decayed roof timbers found in the building to confirm its age.
US scientists examined ice cores, tree rings and lake sediments at 23 sites across the region to form a decade-by-decade picture of temperatures.
