The issue is sensitive in the Balkans as Slobodan Milosevic and Franjo Tudjman, the late presidents of Serbia and Croatia, are widely thought to have made a secret pact to divide Bosnia between their ex-Yugoslav republics.
Tieger said Tudjman dubbed the Serb minority "a cancer on the underbelly of Croatia", and told Gotovina that the offensive would mean "the Serbs will, to all practical purposes, disappear".
The indictment charged that Gotovina conspired with the late Croatian President Franjo Tudjman to conduct"the forcible and permanent removal of the Serb population" from Krajina.
