As a founder of the Tupamaros urban rebel movement, Mujica was shot nine times, and was jailed in 1970 by the country's then democratic authorities as they set about to largely crush his group.
The Tupamaros in Uruguay, the ERP and the Montoneros in Argentina, al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia--all were crushed as soon as governments took the threat seriously.
He describes the mission, political-historical context, organizational stages, strategic characteristics, and implications of insurgency groups including Al Qaeda, the Bolivian Liberation Front, the Uruguayan Tupamaros, and transnational criminal gangs.
