Karl V" -- reputedly the first evening-length opera using the twelve-tone technique developed by Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) -- tells the life story of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, in the form of flashbacks.
The musical material remains, but its organisation is transformed with the help of freely conceived twelve-tone technique, often breached by the composer's Mahlerian reminiscences.
