Ulm  (lm)
A city of southern Germany on the Danube River southeast of Stuttgart. First mentioned in 854, it was later a free imperial city and reached the height of its influence in the 15th century. Napoleon defeated Austrian troops here in October 1805. Population: 121,000.

The report which had been circulated that the Austrians had been beaten and that the whole army had surrendered at Ulm proved to be correct.
There was a great deal of skirmishing just before Ulm surrendered, which kept the cavalry pretty fully occupied.
