Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Institute of Child Health, both in central London, have developed a technique which uses antibodies which recognise and kill the patient's own bone marrow to create space for the donor cells.
Professor Stephen Shennan of UCL said: "His death is deeply saddening to all his friends at the Institute.
