A city of southern Russia near Lake Baikal and the Mongolian border. Founded as a Cossack fortress in 1649, it is a transportation hub and a processing and manufacturing center. Population: 353,000.

Russian Helicopters, the government-controlled holding uniting Russia's helicopter-makers, said in a March 31 [2009] statement that its Ulan-Ude aviation plant had signed a contract with the United Arab Emirates-based Airfreight Aviation to service and repair 22 Mi-17s for Iraq.
Big-name challengers, like Natalia Erdyniyeva (from Ulan-Ude in eastern Siberia, a city with, in its main square, the largest head of Lenin ever made), Khatuna Narimanidze of Georgia and France's Bérangère Schuh, the former indoor world champion, all went out rather tamely.
Other tourist attractions along the journey are the multicultural town of Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude city which is Russia's center of Buddhism.
