Under the fetal insulin hypothesis, a slight underproduction of insulin, an important fetal growth factor, during the prenatal period may cause a baby to be born smaller.
A low A/G ratio may reflect overproduction of globulins, which is seen in mutiple myeloma or autoimmune diseases, or underproduction of albumin, which occurs with cirrhosis, or selective loss of albumin from the circulation, which occurs with kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome).
