A country of west-central Africa on the Bight of Biafra. Comprising the former French Cameroons and the southern part of British Cameroons, it became independent in 1960. Yaoundé is the capital and Douala the largest city. Population: 18,100,000.

However, then President Ahmadou Ahidjo successfully led a campaign in the 1972 referendum to unify the two territories, while current President Paul Biya removed the word 'United' from the country's name of United Republic of Cameroon in the early 1990s, effectively eliminating any vestige of autonomy from the English speaking territories.
Discontent between English-speaking and French-speaking Cameroonians has been simmering for 41 years right after the British-administered Southern Cameroon decided to join the French-speaking La Republique du Cameroun and the country became the United Republic of Cameroon on 2 June 1972--but united more in name than reality.
The resolution was adopted by a roll-call vote of 32 in favour to 1 against (United States), with 8 abstentions (Bangladesh, Brazil, United Republic of Cameroon, China, Jordan, Liberia, Peru, Philippines).
