It's those nameless, unknown warriors that we should keep in mind as we enjoy our day-to-day life here in the great USA.
In War of the Unknown Warriors - Memories of Britain 1939-45, by David Souden, which looks at the role played during the conflict by some of the fine houses and castles now in the care of the National Trust, Margaret Gray tells how her school was uprooted from Ashford in Middlesex to Powis Castle.
The memorials to vast numbers of nameless and unknown warriors are unique to the 20th century: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at The National War Memorial in Ottawa, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, the Cenotaph of the Unknown Warrior in London, England, the nameless marble slab with its ritual flame under Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
