Dau·gav·pils  (dougf-plz, -gäf-plz)
A city of southeast Latvia southeast of Riga. Founded in the 13th century, it was held by Lithuania and Poland before being ceded to Russia in 1771. The city later passed to independent Latvia (1918-1940) and the USSR (1940-1991). Population: 108,000.
