Velvet crab

(Zool.) a European crab (Portunus puber). When adult the black carapace is covered with a velvety pile. Called also lady crab, and velvet fiddler.

I am assured by David McCandless, head of North East Sea Fisheries, that anglers will be able to take as many green soft and pure crabs, although the taking of edible and velvet crab will be banned.
However, the best fish for me to come off the beach was Stephen Ord's fine bass of 7lb gutted, which fell to Velvet Crab during an early morning session.
Red Fish, Megrim, Blue Ling, Lythe, Coley, Tusk, Black Halibut and Round Nose Grenadier, along with crustaceans like Velvet Crabs and Razor Clams, are among the new arrivals.
