A river of western Russia rising in the Valdai Hills northwest of Moscow and flowing about 3,701 km (2,300 mi) generally east and south to the Caspian Sea. It is the longest river of Europe and the main commercial waterway of Russia. The Volga is linked by canals and other rivers to the Baltic Sea.
