In Kirklees, Walking Buses take children from a designated start point to school only in the morning.
Coun Alan Thompson, Northumberland County Council's executive member for highways and operations, said: "The county council is working hard to support schools in developing walking buses, because of their many benefits.
Walking buses - where children walk to school together, picking up 'passengers' along the way - are becoming increasingly popular.
