The claim, first made only eight years ago, may be smart marketing by local tourism chiefs, although Ossie and his fellow islanders are adamant that new research confirms Columbus' arrival on Grand Turk rather than Watling Island in the Bahamas, which he called San Salvador.
The island is 65 miles southeast of San Salvador, known as Watling Island prior to 1926, which many history books peg as the place where Columbus first dropped anchor.
