An area in the posterior temporal lobe of the left hemisphere of the brain involved in the recognition of spoken words.

Wernicke's area  (vrn-kz, -kz)
An area located in the rear of the left temporal lobe of the brain. It is associated with the ability to recognize and understand spoken language. It is named for its discoverer, German neurologist and psychologist Carl Wernicke (1848-1905).

These regions include the inferior frontal gyrus, or Broca's area, in the front left side of the brain, and the posterior temporal region, commonly referred to as Wernicke's area, toward the back left side of the brain.
Neurophysiological changes also can occur (Perry, Pollard, Blakely, Baker, & Vigilante, 1995; Speier, 2000), resulting in decreased functioning in the part of the brain known as the Broca's area, which controls the ability to speak, and in the Wernicke's area, which controls the ability to comprehend language (Siegel' 1999).
