At the Yangshe dig, the outstanding feature is a large pit containing 48 chariots and 105 horses that were buried with a Jin ruler particularly noted for his military campaigns during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1120-781 BC).
The first effort for the unification of writing, it is said, took place during the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty, when his taishi (grand historian) Shi Zhou compiled a lexicon of 15 chapters, standardizing Chinese writing under script called zhuan.
Compton Verney also acquired, at the same New York sale, a Bronze pear- shaped jar or Hu, from the Middle Western Zhou Dynasty (10th-9th century BC).
