In the new study involving 14,000 individuals, researchers from UK and Germany measured the haemoglobin concentration, the count and volume of red and white cells and the sticky cells that prevent bleeding - platelets.
Among the cells they produced were osteoclasts, large white cells involved in the brittle bone disease osteoporosis, and eosinophils, which play a role in allergy and asthma.
It all depends on the kind of white cells that are affected.
