The tall pile, wide gauge design, and increased infill mass allows cleated shoes to penetrate the fibers, plant into the special sand/rubber infill, twist easily and release (with minimal torsional resistance).
As an example the FRA cited a March 1, 2000 inspection where it found 23 locations of wide gauge in the Florida panhandle which had been reported by CSXT employees three weeks earlier, but no remedial action had been taken.
