As well as an almost complete set of management committee minutes and architect's plans for the hall, Vincent found two large bound volumes of signed photographs of conductors and soloists, and 12 autograph books containing the signatures of musical luminaries, such as Elgar and Rachmaninov, as well as eminent visitors to the hall including Charles Dickens and William Thackeray.
The archive also includes autograph books containing the signatures of Charles Dickens, William Thackeray and some of most eminent musicians over the past 160 years including Rostropovich, Saint-Saens and Rachmaninov, and cuttings from 1970 when Simon Rattle, then 15, raised a 70-piece orchestra for charity.
Mr Du Maurier was a wellknown figure in the art world and also illustrated for works by William Thackeray, Thomas Hardy and Wilkie Collins.
