Bilingual education in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which began around 1992, was designed to improve the standard of Mandarin among ethnic minority graduates so they could be more competitive in the workplace, the paper quoted Xinjiang Gov.
ANKARA, Jul 7, 2009 (TUR) -- The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) expressed deep concern over the upheaval in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and the use of disproportionate force to suppress events, where 140 people were killed and 800 more were wounded.
Residents of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) report a heavy police and paramilitary presence inside and outside the regional capital, Urumqi, where deadly clashes erupted at the weekend following a protest by ethnic minority Uyghurs, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported.
