An autonomous region of extreme western China. It came under Chinese control in the 16th century and was the site of a conflict between China and the Soviet Union in 1969. Ürümqi is the capital. Population: 18,400,000.

His statement follows a threat by prominent Al-Qaida militant, Abu Yahya al-Libi, who threatened to attack Chinese targets in "reprisal" for the July 5 riots in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and for the suppression of Muslims.
The trials at the Intermediate People's Court in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, began on Wednesday and came two days after six men were sentenced by the court to death and one was jailed for life over their roles in the riot.
