A ruined Mayan city of western Honduras that flourished from c. 300 b.c. to a.d. 900. The ruins include the Hieroglyphic Stairway with nearly 2,000 glyphs.

Construction of the city of Copan, known as Xukpi by its inhabitants, began around 159 AD; but it remained a relatively small and unimportant settlement until 426 when dynastic rule was established by Yak K'uk Mo' (Sun-Faced First Quetzal Macaw).
El Puente was an important satellite community under the dominion of Copan or Xukpi in the Late Classic Period.
