The YIQ model was designed to separate chrominance from luminance, a requirement in the early days of colour television.
The result obtained by means of applying the YIQ color model and discarding the I and Q channels has a better contrast than the one which could be obtained by only retaining the I component from the HSI (hue-saturation-value) color model.

They compared ten different color spaces (RGB, CMY, YUV, YIQ, YPbPr, YCbCr, YCgCr, YDbDr, HSV or HSI and CIE-XYZ) and found that the most appropriate ones for skin color detection are HSV, YCgCr and YDbDr.

As the commonly used RGB color model creates color distortion due to the high correlation among the R, G, and B components, we transform it into YIQ color model.
