Many of the Polish people fought alongside the Allies in all areas of the armed forces, hoping that Poland would be free, but unfortunately the Yalta agreement of February 1945 was made between the Big Three - the Soviets, Americans and Britain - and the new Polish/Soviet frontier adopted the Curzon Line, pushing the borders of Poland to the west to incorporate previous German land.
Washington's crime was to assume that the Yalta agreement had fallen along with the Berlin Wall, and that the peoples and nations of the erstwhile Soviet empire should thus be free to make their own choices.
He suggests that collaboration broke down partly because the Soviets did not honour the Yalta agreements, though he avoids attacking Stalin personally, and partly because of the failings of American leadership.
