An area of 250 km wide and 10,000 km long, where people can observe it, covers the populous Yangtze River valley including several big cities.
Land use pressures for agriculture have swallowed up the alligators' natural habitat in the Yangtze River valley, but international environmental groups have been working with Chinese wildlife officials on an initiative to reverse a 7,000-year-old trend of habitat loss and population decline.
