In 1988, Napoleon Chagnon published evidence that among the famously warlike Yanomamo of Venezuela, men who had participated in a homicide had significantly more wives and children than their less warlike brethren.
In numerous warlike tribes such as the Yanomamo of Venezuela, men obtained wives by capturing them from enemy villages.
Carneiro did field work with three indigenous tribes in the Amazon basin--the Kuikuru Indians of central Brazil, the Amahuaca of eastern Peru and the Yanomamo of southern Venezuela.
