The researchers believe that their observations may be applied to other species too, such as the female yellow-bellied marmot that also adjusts its social behaviour largely to get access to direct reproduction.
The smaller yellow-bellied marmot builds dens at lower elevations and weighs about 10 pounds.
These include pine marten, Pika, yellow-bellied marmots, western toads, Cascade frogs, spotted frogs, goldeneye (duck), great gray owls, boreal owl, three-toed woodpeckers, black-backed woodpeckers, gray jays, Clark's nutcracker, mountain bluebirds, gray-crowned rosy-finch and many more species.
