The capital and largest city of Armenia south of Tbilisi, Georgia. An ancient city founded on the site of a fortress established in the eighth century b.c., it was strategically important as a trade center on caravan routes linking Transcaucasia and India after the seventh century a.d. Population: 1,100,000.
