Zhytomyr

Zhy·to·myr or Zhi·to·mir  (zh-tômîr)
A city of west-central Ukraine west of Kiev. First mentioned in 1240, it was a way station on the trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople, and was incorporated into Russia in the late 1770s. Population: 278,000.

In February 2007 the Zhytomyr Oblast Archives, with the approval of the National Archives, ordered the seizure of Torah scrolls that had been returned to the Jewish community in 2004 after having been in the possession of the Government since Soviet times.
Wearing his trademark duffel coat and battered tennis shoes, Onoprienko covered his ears with his hands after the sentence was read out in court at Zhytomyr, west of Kiev.
He has confessed to all the killings, at his trial which started last November in Zhytomyr, 87 miles west of the Ukranian capital Kiev.
