Ham the Chimp Becomes First Hominid Launched into Outer Space (1961)

Ham was chosen from 40 chimpanzee flight candidates at New Mexico's Holloman Air Force Base to be the first hominid launched into outer space. He was named after an acronym for the lab that prepared him for his historic mission—the Holloman Aerospace Medical Center—and was trained to do simple tasks. American Veteran Gets New Arms

An American soldier who lost all of his limbs to a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2009 is enjoying the limited use of his new arms, thanks to a team of surgeons that performed a double-arm transplant on him in December. Brendan Marrocco, a 26-year-old former infantryman, is only the seventh person in the US to have undergone a double-hand or double-arm transplant. The recovery process is a slow one, but doctors expect Marrocco to recover much of his arm and hand use over the next two to three years. More...
