Theodore Roosevelt Shot in the Chest While Campaigning (1912)

During a bid for the presidency in 1912, Roosevelt was shot by saloonkeeper John Schrank. The bullet lodged in his chest after penetrating a steel eyeglass case and a folded copy of the 50-page speech he was carrying in his jacket, but he refused to go to the hospital until after he had delivered his scheduled speech. Doctors deemed it too dangerous to remove the bullet, and it remained in Roosevelt's chest for the rest of his life. What did Roosevelt say about the shooting during his speech? More...

Kenka Matsuri (2016)

The Kenka Matsuri (Roughhouse Festival) takes place October 14-15 in Shirahama, Japan, and thousands flock to the shrine where the festival is held. The roughhousing starts as teams of mikoshi-bearers jostle each other for position in the procession to the Matsubara Hachiman Shrine. Once they reach the shrine, they spin their heavy burden, raise it up high in the air, and let it crash to the ground—difficult maneuvers designed to thrill the crowd. The mikoshi engage in a final battle in an open field, where thousands of cheering spectators take sides and egg them on. More...

Oh Lordy! Vatican Medals Misspell "Jesus"

It is not often that a spelling blunder gets the Internet abuzz, but when news broke that the Vatican misspelled "Jesus" as "Lesus" on commemorative medals issued in honor of Pope Francis's papacy, it caused a considerable stir. The Vatican withdrew the coins upon discovering the mistake but not before several of them had been sold. These could become valuable collector's items. Online wisecrackers blamed the "Lesuits" for the typo, while others posed the question "What would Lesus do?" More...
