Lev Shestov

Shestov was a Ukrainian-born existentialist philosopher. Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Søren Kierkegaard, Shestov sought knowledge through ungrounded subjective thought instead of objective reason. He combined his existentialism with a religious outlook that emphasized a belief in the value of the human struggle. In 1921, he fled the aftermath of the October Revolution and lived in Paris until his death in 1938. What other philosophers did Shestov influence during his lifetime? More...

Marie Antoinette Guillotined (1793)

The daughter of Austrian Archduchess Maria Theresa and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, Marie Antoinette was the queen of France and wife of King Louis XVI. Her devotion to Austria, reputation for extravagance, and connection to scandals made her unpopular and helped to provoke the French Revolution. After the storming of the Tuileries palace, she and Louis were accused of treason. The king was executed, and Marie was tried, found guilty, and guillotined. Did she really say "Let them eat cake"? In 1939, the president appointed him to the Supreme Court. For what controversial act did Congress attempt to impeach Douglas? More...

Kawagoe Matsuri (2016)

Only during the Kawagoe Matsuri can festivalgoers view the enormous floats of old Edo (the old name for Tokyo). More than 20 richly decorated parade floats, thought to be reproductions of floats from Tokyo's Kanda-jinja Shrine, are carried through the streets of Kawagoe. In the evening, the floats come together and bump into one another in the center of town. Hyashi bands—which play traditional Japanese music on the flute, drum, shamisen (three-stringed lute) and other instruments—also spar with one another, trying their best to interrupt the others' rhythm. Minors in California Banned from Tanning Bed Use

California has become the first state in the US to ban minors—anyone under the age of 18—from using tanning beds. Previous legislation had banned those under the age of 14 from using ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices but allowed minors 14 and older to use them with parental consent. In 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified UV-emitting tanning devices as carcinogenic after finding that skin cancer risk increases 75% when a person starts using a tanning device before the age of 30. Though California's new law is the most restrictive of any US state, Brazil has gone so far as to ban tanning beds entirely. More...
