Secret Sharing

In cryptography, secret sharing is a method of guarding information by distributing pieces of it to a number of people or entities. Each participant has a share of the secret, but no share is useful on its own. Some shares may even be decoys that are not useful at all. In certain scenarios, multiple participants may collaborate to try to reconstruct the original secret. How can they be certain that no one is misrepresenting himself just to gain access to more shares? More...

The Johnny Bright Incident (1951)

The Johnny Bright Incident was an allegedly racially-motivated on-field assault against black football star Johnny Bright by white player Wilbanks Smith during a college football game between Bright's Drake University and Smith's Oklahoma A&M. Ebisu Festival (2015)

This Japanese festival is named after Ebisu, one of the seven Japanese gods of luck, who is the protector of businessmen and fishermen. According to legend, all the other gods leave their shrines during October, which is known as "the godless month," and gather at the temple of Izumo to discuss issues of great importance. Because he is deaf, Ebisu cannot hear the summons and does not accompany them. The Ebisu Festival is a time for members of trade associations and political and literary societies to socialize. The festival is also a time to pray for prosperity. More...

"Frankentree" Fiasco Cuts Cocoa Supply

A cloning technique aimed at increasing cocoa output by hastening seed production has led instead to sickly, misshapen trees, dubbed "Frankentrees," that topple under their own weight and yield poor-quality beans. Typical cocoa trees produce seed pods after four years, but the cloned trees take just three. Thus, to boost cocoa production, the Indonesian government began a campaign in 2009 to get farmers to plant the modified saplings. Unfortunately, three years into the $350-million campaign, output continues to fall and discouraged cocoa farmers are increasingly turning to the more lucrative palm oil industry. More...
