Postcards

Postcards are a way to send message-bearing cards through the mail without an envelope. The earliest known picture postcard was sent in London to the writer Theodore Hook in 1840. Hook most likely created the hand-painted card and sent it to himself as a practical joke on the postal service, since the image on the card is a caricature of post office workers. The Republic of Czechoslovakia was founded on October 28, 1918, when the National Committee in Prague proclaimed independence from the Austrian Hapsburg emperors and took over the administration of an independent Czechoslovak state. Independence Day was widely celebrated in Czechoslovakia until the Communists seized power there in 1948, but the day continued to be recognized in the US with special banquets, addresses, religious services, and cultural programs. Communities with large Czech or Slovak populations may also mark the occasion. More...

Water Use Outstrips Population Growth

According to the World Resources Institute, water use has been growing at more than twice the rate of population growth over the past century and will likely increase considerably in coming years. While we probably will not run out of water in the near future, access to fresh, clean water is a growing issue. Billions of people already lack access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation, and millions die each year of preventable waterborne diseases. One company estimates that by 2030 there could be a 40 percent shortfall between water demand and available supplies. More...
